The concept of yin and yang has always been fascinating to me; whether it is academics, my various interactions with pop culture, or my dynamics with my friends and family. I believe that the intermingling of forces and the irrationality of human existence are conveyable through this concept, and it is this force I set out to explore in my work. Inspired by the ‘sublime’ art movement, championed primarily by artists like J.M.W. Turner and Thomas Cole, I decided to use nature and the sheer immensity of natural forces as a stand-in for the irrationalities within ourselves. I decided to anthropomorphise the natural elements of clouds, lightening, and dried sticks to further this analogy. The element of nature also allowed me to take an objective view – as the idea of balance is central to the yin-yang. It also served as a reminder that humans and their experiences will always be subservient to nature and its transience quality.
